One of 2021’s standout artists, Novaa pays homage to one of her heroes on the aptly titled “Audre”. The song is a celebration of American feminist writer, poet and civil activist Audre Lorde. Novaa was inspired to write the song after she read Audre’s book, Your Silence Will Not Protect You. It had a big affect on Novaa, she says that it, “changed my perspective as a person and artist massively.”
“With this song I wanted to shine light on Audre and her incredible work,” the Berlin-based artist says. “It makes me angry and sad that our society mostly doesn’t see, recognise nor credit the work that black women do,” she adds.
The song is taken from Novaa’s new album, She’s A Rose, which will be released later this year. It follows “This Ain’t Your Home”, “She’s A Rose” and “I’m Hungry” which were all rather special.”Audre” is out now on Apple Music and Spotify.
