Simply put, Sóley’s “Sunrise Skulls” is a stunning piece of art. Both the enchanting song and the beautiful, cinematic video that accompanies it. “Sunrise Skulls” is the first release from her forthcoming concept album, Mother Melancholia. She describes her new sound as being, “Nosferatu meets Thelma and Louise in a vampire church under the watchful eye of David Lynch.”
The video’s director, Samatha Shay says that, “the concept felt massive,” when Sóley first approached her. Sóley wanted it to focus on, “marginalisation of women and femmes and the destruction of the planet.” Samantha describes the video as being, “a multilayered portrait of experiences,” that draws on hers and the performers’ experiences.
Mother Melancholia is Sóley’s fourth solo album following 2017’s Endless Summer. The album will be released digitally and on limited edition vinyl on October 22nd. Sóley has also just announced a European tour which starts in November, you can find more details here. “Sunrise Skulls” is today’s Song of The Day and it’s out now on Apple Music as well as Spotify.
